Q&A

Q: Why did you commercialize a relic of the past, such as coal?

A: Although the negative aspects of coal have come to be emphasized in various ways, it was once a booming industry that was a driving force behind the Japanese economy and was even nicknamed the "black diamond." Although Japan produces almost no oil, many coal mines have been developed across the country, and coal has become a major player in most transportation systems, including shipping and railways, as well as in the core of industry, including steel manufacturing. I was there. It can be said that coal was a part of life for people who lived during this era.
Although coal is rarely seen these days, we have created a product that allows you to at least enjoy the scent of its combustion.

Q: I think some people don't like the smell of burning coal...

A: SL coal incense was commercialized for people who feel nostalgic about the unique smell of burning coal. In particular, we are thinking of people who spent their youth and boyhood in the middle of the Showa era. These are people who have fond memories of being with elementary school classroom stoves and steam locomotives.
However, if you find the smell of burning coal to be offensive, please refrain from using it forcibly.
As a creator, I would be happy if this product brings back nostalgic memories and pleasant moments due to the Proust effect.

Q: What is the Proust effect?

A: The Proust effect refers to the fact that when a person experiences a unique scent, past memories and memories associated with that scent come back to mind. (also known as the Proust phenomenon)
The name comes from the statement written by the great French writer Marcel Proust at the beginning of his masterpiece ``In Search of Lost Time'': ``The smell of a madeleine soaked in tea brings back memories and memories of the past pleasantly all at once.'' This is the reason.

Q: Since there are many sources of odors that can be expected to produce the Proust effect, why did you start commercializing products from coal?

A: The Proust effect depends on what kind of memories each person has related to scent. Based on my own experience (as the owner of Zunobu), coal is a case in which I am convinced that the Proust effect occurs.

Q: It seems that there are several types of coal available, but is it real?

A: All are genuine. Many of the domestic coal mines have been closed for several decades, but we do our best to obtain authentic coal from the past.

Q: What is SL standard coal?

A: This is the coal used by modern dynamically preserved steam locomotives.

Q: What is the grade of coking coal?

A: SL coal incense uses bituminous coal. It was used in school stoves and steam locomotives during the Showa era. By the way, anthracite, which is said to be of a higher grade, has a higher carbonization rate and better combustion efficiency, making it difficult to detect odors.

Q: Why is it necessary to have products by region of origin?

A: This is so that you can enjoy different scents depending on the production area. Bituminous coal contains 10-20% impurities, and this composition varies slightly depending on the region of production. Each of these gives off a unique odor.

Q: Rather than focusing on coal fields such as Chikuho and Ishikari, could you produce products based on coal mines such as Manda, Miike, Yubari, and Bibai?

A: I think it's a fair point, but there are more than 100 coal mines that existed in the past in Japan alone, so we have determined that it is impossible to have a product lineup that covers all of them. In the future, if there is a request and we can obtain the original material, we will respond to it as a limited edition item.

Q: Are there any concerns about toxicity?

A: Coal has been consumed in large quantities around the world for more than 100 years, and although there have been problems with excessive inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning caused by incomplete combustion, in general, the combustion of coal itself Toxicity has never been an issue.
The amount of gas generated by a single SL coal incense stick is extremely small.

Q: Coal is demonized in the SDGs, but isn't that a problem?

A: Since the amount of coal particles contained in SL Coal Incense is very small, the amount of carbon dioxide emitted is also very small. Thermal power plants burn 100 tons of fuel every day, so the amount of exhaust gas is an issue, but with this product we believe it can be ignored.

Q: Is there anything equivalent to the award period?

A: None. Coal has been formed underground for over a million years, so it has an infinite shelf life. However, there is a risk of mold growing on the adjuvant used in manufacturing this product, so please store it in a cool, dry place.
